Epoxy is a common way to provide a sturdy, affordable coating to floors. We use three types of epoxy paint. Each type differs based on its ingredients:
100 Percent Solid:
This is the purest of epoxy paints and is known for its extreme durability. However, it’s challenging to apply because it cures and hardens very quickly. It’s purity also means it’s more expensive than other epoxy paints.
Water-based epoxy takes solid epoxy and mixes it with water, usually using a 40/60 ratio. This type of epoxy paint is ideal for homes, garage floor paint, and busy office buildings because the fumes it gives off are not harmful to breathe.
Solvent-based epoxy is a combination of solid epoxy with a chemical solvent. Like water-based epoxy, it utilizes a 40/60 ratio, but it’s not ideal for residential use due to the potent fumes it puts off. It makes a nice floor coating, but installation requires the use of protective gear, and visitors should not be in the area during the installation.
